UPDATE: New Science Diver Course available
The Expedition Akumal team are offering the unique opportunity for you to come to the science office for a special class all about coral reefs and our reef restoration work, and to join the team on a real research dive in Akumal.
To take part you need to be dive qualified, but the course can be catered for all levels (module course structure to suit different needs)
You will learn essential skills from our marine biologists and PADI professionals
Joining a Science Expedition is the best way to learn about our work and a great way to learn new underwater skills.
“My science dives with Expedition Akumal have been learning experiences and created a sense of care for these little creatures that make up the fabulous reef that I love. It has taught me to ‘see’ things that have been right in front of me all along.
I have also learned news skills, such as (trying to) stay stationary over the growing coral stems, to clean off the algae—very satisfying task.”

PADI Open Water Diver and Regular Expeditioner
Modules allow students to build up their knowledge base and underwater skills each time they visit Akumal. Focusing on fine-tuning buoyancy and trim to begin with, divers then go on to learn new skills related to scientific diving and coral restoration. Eventually you will receive certification as an Expedition Akumal Science Diver Volunteer, which will allow you to take part in our coral restoration work and data collection for the Expedition Akumal database, as a volunteer member of the team.
