“Many of us ask what can I, as one person, do, but history shows us that everything good and bad starts because somebody does something or does not do something.”

— Sylvia Earle, Oceanographer

How can I help?

Expedition Akumal Coral Restoration Project is a community group relying on donations to pay for boats, equipment, and outreach. If you would like to support coral restoration and research in Akumal you can donate via our PayPal button below.

Donations charged through this website are processed by our U.S. fiscal sponsor, the Yucatan Environmental Foundation (YEF), and thus can be tax deductible in the U.S. You will first receive an order confirmation and then, when your order is processed, a YEF receipt, which you should print out for your tax records. If you would prefer to pay by check rather than by credit card, please make your payment to YEF, include the purpose of your donation, mail to YEF, c/o Alex Bradley, PO Box 1813, Port Townsend, WA 98368-0219. Please include your email address, so we can save paper and send your tax receipt electronically. Thank you!

Want to help us?

If you would like to help in this process there are 3 ways to get involved:

  1. Donate – Expedition Akumal is non-profit, therefore we rely upon your donations to continue saving the reef. Donations can be made via Paypal in the footer below, in our office No.207 in the Hotel Akumal Caribe, or via CEA (just make sure to say it is for Expedition Akumal Coral Restoration!). If you would like to make a donation of equipment for scuba or the office please just have a look at our wish list by clicking here or contact us here with any questions.
  2. Come on an Expedition! –Our highly experienced team of PADI professional volunteers at Akumal Dive Center will take you to the restoration sites and nurseries, and a percentage of your dive costs will be donated to the restoration activities. Stay at the Hotel Akumal Caribe who financed the project start up and continue to support our work. Our lead biologist can also provide courses on coral reef ecology and restoration and on-land talks for non-divers and students. Find out more here.
  3. So you are an experienced diver with a background in marine biology? Contact us to find out more about volunteering with Expedition Akumal. It is the perfect time to get involved with our coral restoration project. Find out more here.
